Deconstruction & Reconstruction: A Conversation With My Son - Part 1

Part 1 - The Good Foundations

Sometimes conversations about faith begin with what’s broken. But before Collin and I talk about doubt, questions, and the complicated parts of our journeys, we wanted to start here with gratitude, memory, and love. This first conversation is about where we came from: our evangelical upbringing, the community that formed us, and the ways church provided a beautiful container for life and belonging.

In this episode, Collin and I both reflect on growing up in the church, the early rhythms of faith that shaped us, and the profound support our family experienced when Collin battled cancer at 16 years old. We talk honestly about the goodness we received, the friendships, the care, the sense of meaning - and how, even as our beliefs have evolved, we still hold deep appreciation for those who walked with us.

Before we explore deconstruction or reconstruction, we begin with blessing. We begin by honoring what was genuinely life-giving and the good container that we both had.

If you grew up in a faith community, whether you still embrace it or have needed to step away, I hope this conversation gives space for tenderness, memory, and compassion toward your own story. I’d love to hear your reflections in the comments: What was good? What do you still carry with gratitude?

Welcome to Part 1. Let’s begin at the beginning.
