Deconstruction & Reconstruction: A Conversation With My Son - Part 2

Becoming an Atheist

In Part 1 of this video series, Collin and I reflected on the foundations of our faith journey - growing up in the church, the beautiful sense of community we experienced there, and the tender season when our family walked through his cancer diagnosis and treatment. Those were years full of love, support, and meaning.

Part 2 moves us into a different chapter: the season when real questions emerged.

This conversation picks up as Collin leaves home, goes to college with friends who were not Christians, steps into early adult life, and begins facing deep questions about his faith. We talk candidly about how those doubts grew, what he wrestled with internally, and ultimately, the conversation we had when he told me he no longer believed in God.

It wasn’t a theoretical conversation. It was a father and son who love each other navigating something deeply personal, deeply emotional, and deeply spiritual. In this episode, we explore what it meant for both of us to continue relationship when our beliefs were no longer aligned. What does it require to have real conversations about faith when you don’t agree? What does listening look like? What does love look like?

If you are a parent walking through something like this… or a child who has struggled to share your struggle or your truth with your parents… or simply someone interested in honest, compassionate conversations about faith and doubt, my hope is that this episode gives you language, permission, framework and maybe even a little hope.
